Ekurhuleni mayor Clr Mzwandile Masina has vowed to rename Ergo Road in Brakpan to Margaret Gazo Road in memory of the late struggle icon.
Masina made the pronouncement on Thursday, last week, as he delivered the keynote address at the inaugural Margaret Gazo Lecture at the KwaThema Community Hall.
This year marks the centennial anniversary of the birth of Margaret Gazo.
Mama Gazo participated in organising and leading the 1956 Woman’s March to the Union Buildings to oppose pass laws and the apartheid system.
“The legacy by women like Margaret Gazo is not dormant, it is full of lessons and inspiration to carry future generations for centuries to come, we know this because Mama Gazo has multiplied,” said Masina.
The mayor was joined by the Gazo family for a wreath laying ceremony at the tombstone of the struggle icon before attending the memorial lecture.
The Margaret Gazo Lecture forms part of a series of events which the City of Ekurhuleni is hosting in honour of Oliver Tambo Month.
